(August 12, 1948)
ALMOST 100 YEARS OLD
The Venerable Amos Broadwater, Garrett County's Oldest
Citizen, Pases Away.
HE WAS BORN ON AUGUST 9, 1804
And Died on Saturday Last at the Home of His Son Near New Germany-Father
of Twelve Children
The venerable Amos Broadwater, oldest citizen of Garrett County,
died at the residence of his son near New Germany, on Saturday
last, having reached the remarkable age of ninety-seven years,
four months, and six days. The cause of Mr. Broadwater's death
is presumed to have been a general breakdown of his system owing
to his age.
He was the son of Charles and Rebecca Broadwater; was born
in Loudoun County, Va.; and moved with his parents to Allegany
County in 1807, and to the place where he died in 1824, at that
time a dense wilderness stretching from Fort Cumberland on the
East to Fort Duquesne or Pittsburgh, on the West. The most remote
ancestor of Amos Broadwater was Cornelius Broadwater, who was
born in England, emigrating to this country in 1804. .
To the "Miscellaneous Writings" of Mr. Jacob Brown,
of Cumberland, published in 1895, we are indebted for the following
concerning the life of Mr. Broadwater.
"Amos Broadwater is now the living Abraham of the race-born
Aug. 9, 1804. Still hale and hearty with but little signs of
old age, mounts his horse and can ride to Oakland or Cumberland
like a man of 40. He has retired from farming but not entirely
from business-can drive as sharp a contract as he ever could and
he never was bad in a trade. Always strongly Democratic-never
split the ticket. A candidate once or more for the Orphans' Court,
for the mere honor the thing as he termed it. The family are
Democratic by nature, but here and there a Republican puts in
an appearance to destroy the family monotony. There is about
the same unanimity in religion-Methodist to the core. 'Uncle
Amos' stands high in the temple; can sing one of Dr. Watts' ancient
hymns with as much earnestness as any deacon in his church. He
is proud of his children and descendants-boasts of twelve living
children, 93 grand and 67 great grandchildren. Has been the husband
of Sarah (Sigler) 68 happy but changeable years-a union lasting
thirteen years beyond the jubilee period. Only recently the whole
civilized world united in a glorification of Queen Victoria because
she had reigned wisely over a great nation for fifty prosperous
years. But here is an unknown family reign of the same husband
and wife for 68 years. Such a rare instance of matrimonial unity
and longevity deserves a neighborhood celebration. May these
favored two aged people enjoy many more such years as are number
in the far and near past."
On page 261 of Mr. Brown's book, containing an account of
a picnic held July 1st, 1892, at New Germany, reference is made
to a meeting between the author and Mr. Broadwater, as follows:
"We had the satisfaction of meeting a number of old friends
and acquaintances, and many young ones. Among the former, the
venerable Amos Broadwater, in his 88th year, hale, hearty, and
active, with a wife in the same plight, with whom he says he has
lived at peace for 67 years. This is extraordinary indeed, 8
years more and the venerable pair will celebrate their diamond
wedding, a thing so rare as to be almost beyond occurrence. We
failed to see the genial face of Patrick Dorsey, a life long friend,
but met two of his charming daughters, and also two bright sons,
one a medical student at the University in Baltimore."
Shortly after the above meeting, Mrs. Broadwater died, when
Mr. Broadwater married again, the second wife being quite young.
The funeral of the deceased took place on Monday, the service
being held at the New Germany Methodist Episcopal church and were
in charge of the pastor. An immense crowd of relatives were in
attendance.

AMOS BROADWATER
Amos Broadwater, formerly of Garrett County, Md., died at
his home near Burkley's Mills June 8th. He was aged 71 years,
3 months, and 29 days. His death was due to a carbuncle after
about two weeks' serious illness. Mr. Broadwater who had been
a widower, was married to the widow of the late William D. Bear,
about two years ago, and the couple lived happily at the latter's
farm home. He had four sons and two daughters by a former marriage,
who will probably share his estate with the widow. He was possessed
of considerable property and left a will, the contents of which
have not yet been made public.
The funeral took place last Sunday at his former home at New
Germany, Md., the funeral services were held in the Methodist
church. It was the request of the deceased that Rev. Silas Hoover,
of the Church of the Brethren, who had baptised him many years
ago, should preach his funeral service, and he did so, his discourse
being pronounced one of the best ever heard in that neighborhood
on such an occasion.
The funeral was one of the largest ever held at New Germany.
Mr. Broadwater was widely known and people came many miles to
pay their last respects. The children of his second wife, including
M. E. and W. P. Bear, respected hims as a stepfather who was kind
to their mother, and his death is mourned by two families as well
as a large circle of friends.
